2.6 The Mexican Staring Frog of Southern Sri Lanka

Preview

Aired: June 10, 1998

There may not be an episode in the South Park universe that I’ve seen more times without remembering much about. This episode, like the last two, is also a VHS classic. However, outside of one very memorable quote, the rest is very foggy in my mind. I know this is where we really get more of Jimbo and Ned. For some reason I have always like Ned’s character, but I have never really been able to explain why. He’s unique, but seems to lack in memorable moments.

The title of this episode is enough for a laugh every time I read it. In my youth, I knew the title and was aware of it, but as an adult as I think of it and break it down, it’s hysterical. As I look a little more into this episode I am reminded that Jimbo and Ned have a local cable hunting show that is a primary focus of the episode. They battle Jesus and Pals for local ratings and anytime Jesus and Pals is involved, I laugh. Side note, this may be the episode that Bob Denver guest stars on Jesus and Pals and that is one of my favorite little bits in South Park history.

I’ve hyped up this stretch of season 2 for a while now and just because I don’t remember a ton of it doesn’t mean I expect it to score badly. I expect this episode to finish in our current top 7 with room for more depending on how much Matt laughs at Jimbo and Ned.

Matt’s Review

This episode leads off with Jimbo and Ned on their show “Huntin and Killin” and their new strategy of “thinning out their numbers”. We then go to the classroom with Mr. Garrison teaching the students about the Vietnam war. They are assigned to interview someone who was in Vietnam. The boys go to see Jimbo and Ned to ask them about it. Jimbo explains how him and Ned met in Vietnam. Jimbo and Ned went on a mission, just them 2, to win the war. They end up landing the helicopter in the middle of a group of the Vietnam army and take all of them out using swords, fists and even a horse. We then see how Jesus’ ratings are suffering from Jimbo and Ned’s show. Jesus has Bob Denver on his show and it goes…terrible. The boys give their report to the class but Mr. Garrison calls it bullshit and gives them an F and detention. While in detention, the boys scheme how to get back at Jimbo. The boys send in a clip of the Mexican Staring Frog and Jimbo and Ned broadcast it on their show. Jesus’ show finds out about this and basically turn the show into Jerry Springer. The boys continue to make clips of the Mexican Staring Frog to mess with Jimbo. Jesus’ show launches an investigation into the Mexican Staring Frog and launches their “Too Hot for TV”. Jimbo and Ned go hunting for the Mexican Staring Frog. Ned looks the Mexican Staring Frog in the eyes and has to go to the hospital. The boys reveal that it was all made up and they all get invited to tell their story on “Jesus and Pals”. The producer eggs them on to start fighting. A brawl erupts in the studio. Jesus finds out what his producer did. The boys and Jimbo apologize to each other. All is well in South Park.
