1.2 Volcano

Aired: August 20, 1997

This episode holds a special place in my heart. Volcano is the first episode of South Park I ever saw. Even though I wasn’t sitting down watching it intently, I remember where I was, who I was with, and watching it on a tiny damn TV. I also know that I didn’t catch on to this episode until sometime in September or October of 97, so I was behind on the times. As an 11-year old, I knew this was something I wouldn’t be able to watch whenever I wanted, but I knew it was something I had to get more of.

Besides all of my nostalgia, I still hold this episode in pretty high regards after all these years. The concept of Scuzzlebutt still makes me laugh. While Jimbo and Ned aren’t my favorite characters in the South Park universe, they are unique and probably remind me too much of several people I’ve known in my life. They are probably at their best in the early seasons. I’m realizing now that outside of this being: 1. the first episode I ever saw and 2. our introduction to Jimbo and Ned there are few things I remember specifically. I look forward to reliving and scoring this one. – Drew

Character Score (Out of 3)

Stan – Composite: 2.65

Drew – 2.7: Stan is the main focus of the core four in this episode and he delivers with his typical internal conflict driven self.

Matt – 2.6: Stan’s inability to shoot anything until he kills Scuzzle Butts at the end of the episode and ruins the day. His “fat ass” comments against Cartman and their bickering was also hilarious.

Cartman – Composite: 2.65

Drew – 2.3: I was probably low here. Cartman was great, but I hold him to a high standard. His Nam flashbacks were great.

Matt – 3: Memory of ‘Nam. Scuzzle Butt story. Overall just hilarious.

Kyle – Composite: 1.25

Drew – 1.2: I’m not sure what Kyle did during this episode. Outside of brief sarcasm and a small fart, I don’t remember him being here.

Matt – 1.3: Makes fun of Cartman a few times, nothing else too impressive.

Kenny – Composite: 2.65

Drew – 2.4: Kenny becomes Jimbo and Ned’s honorary nephew and the process of that is hilarious.

Matt – 2.9: His ability to chug gasoline… annihilates the ram with a machine gun Kenny’s death: Hit by a flaming projectile from the volcano. It actually just lands in front of him, so he steps out from behind it. The flaming rock then rolls on top of him. He then comes back at the end of the episode but Ned drops his gun and it fires and kills Kenny again. He floats away and the rats run after him.

Secondary Characters (Out of 10)

Drew – 9: Jimbo and Ned are the main secondary characters in this episode. However, Randy makes his first appearance and Scuzzlebutt steals the show. The news reporter is always a subtle treat for me.

Matt – 9.7: Ned, Uncle Jimbo, Randy, Mayor, Officer Barbrady

Composite – 9.35

Episode Score

Relevance (5) – Composite: 4.25

Drew – 4: The first mid-podcast score change in show history. After discussing it, this episode was relevant AF.

Matt – 4.5: Government not allowing people to hunt, so they have to act as though they are in danger.

Irreverence (5) – Composite: 3.85

Drew – 4.2: Several things in this episode set the tone for irreverence. Gun safety, underage drinking, poaching just to name a few.

Matt – 3.5: In the episode they reference the Democrats, which honestly is more like PETA but still funny how they mock it.

Laugh Score (5) – Composite: 4.4

Drew – 3.8: I laughed the hardest at the concept of duck and cover to survive a volcano. There were several small laughs throughout the episode.

Matt – 5: Large weapons to kill the animals, Scuzzle Butts, Cartman acting like he was in ‘Nam.

Personal (7) – Composite: 6.5

Drew – 6.1: This was the first episode I saw all the way back in 1997. Nostalgia alone nets this score.

Matt – 6.9: Suspense music. Hunting. Scuzzle Butts. Chef’s song “Hot Lava”.

Favorite Quote

Drew – “The people of South Park are humble and friendly, but now a ticking time bomb of hot lava waits to engulf these people and end their miserable lives with one last fleeting moment of excruciatingly painful burning agony.” – Reporter

Matt – “It’s coming right for us!”

Favorite Moment

Drew – Scuzzlebutt saving the day by weaving a basket.

Matt – When all of the kids have guns and Stan is calling Cartman out for lying about being in ‘Nam. Cartman then loads and aims his gun at Stan. Uncle Jimbo then yells to be careful, because Cartman is going to spill his beer.

Matt’s Review

Of the 2-3 seasons I have watched, this is up there for my favorite episode so far. Cartman’s fake ‘Nam memory, his back and forth with Stan, Uncle Jimbo/Ned’s very flawed morals, Scuzzle Butt, and many other things. They mayor was also very funny in this episode. Her original mistaken “geologist, gynocologist, geologist” and then the continued retakes to make the news feel more dramatic. Stan finally killing something at the end, but it so happens to be the hero. Chef’s song “Hot Lava” was pretty funny as well.
